Ah, Spring!

Ah, Spring; Ah, North!
I watch you cross the cove and
Slowly ripen on the mountain slope
Each evening in spring light.

Such a late bloomer, I think,
But you sure can slow dance.
My heart is in my throat watching
Your red maple buds flush to first flower,

So sweet, so innocent, each year
Before insistent yellow poplar and birch
Leaking sap, burst into view.
Take your time; summer will come.

No need to rush the green season’s ease
Nor the drying winds of fall, nor imagine
The leafless winter when we stand naked
Before each other, numb as a hake.
