The story behind Going By
Bearing witness to the end of a once thriving saltwater farm is a sad undertaking, yet sometimes one can do little but observe.
I was walking around the great old place, awaiting a good composition, when along came the two sheep and one goat. A couple of exposures and that was it.
The old New England expression for a place or person, or most anything in this sort of disrepair and decrepitude is gone by, or, going by. Thus, especially with the animals passing in front of me, the title is a no-brainer.
When my mother first saw this photograph her immediate response was, “My God, it’s the three of you,” referring to me, the black sheep in the lead, and my two younger brothers following behind. Some things we never live down.
