Philip Conkling’s accompanying poem . . .
Not For Us To Know
Before there were altars, arches or plinths,
Before the burning bush, or the fabled golden calf,
There were torrents in rivers to wash away our tears,
And then the daily sunrise and the rising of the tide.
Why, why, why? is all we want to know,
We never hear an answer, we do not speak in tongues.
When Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran,
He dreamed he saw a ladder, the top was out of sight.
When it’s time to climb, hand over hand,
Who will pull us up when our feet begin to slip?
All we’ll hear is wind, a rushing in our ears.
Why is not the question, it’s not for us to know.
