Incoming Tide

Usually I am deep
When you stir me awake
To listen to the music
Of the incoming tide.

When the cove is dark,
Curling white lips
Make wave after wave
On an incoming tide.

Can a cove really be
So broad and so flat
To slow the surge
Of our incoming tide?

Can the moan of the sea
Be heard in the shell
Of a snail unmoored
By an incoming tide?

In the still of the night,
Memory chords play
Tricks on the mind
On each turn of the tide.

The cove is now full
Refreshed and asleep,
With you at my side,
On an incoming tide.
