Philip Conkling’s accompanying poem . . .
Watching Weather
Times were we hauled back,
And took a holding turn,
Then hauled again until
Hull down with ice or stone
We crested the far horizon.
We’re practical people, god knows,
And have weathered tragedy.
But nothing like when our schooners
Grounded out hard ashore,
After steam and coal were kings.
You get used to watching weather,
Because it tells our future.
Through lowering clouds
You can sense the sea change
Now building in a freshening gale.
