An island farmhouse is on its knees,
Its withered lilac, a humbled grace; 
Not defeated, but a silent reproach
That hard won lives slip slowly by.

Blessed are the meek, Solomon says.
But they will not inherit this earth,
When the mighty are so blessed
To claim the next one now in this.

Connect us to the working land;
Connect us to the knowing sea;
Take heart from the encircling isle;
Ground us in this simple scene.
