In essence, this book is my life since 2003 when I dove back into this archipelagic world I so love after a six year no-photography hiatus following a near-death medical odyssey in 1997.*

Virtually every image in
Going Deep was made since then. I did not set out to “do” a book....but a few years back it was clear that there was a book waiting to emerge from the work I was doing and now, at last, here it is!

I will admit that I am very content with this book. If I were to be less modest, I would confess that I am very, very happy with it. But I invite you to be the judge of that......

The book consists of 196 pages, containing 175 images. It has been printed here in the United States by a truly exceptional press and everything about this book is exactly as I would have it.

I am most especially humbled and honored by the Foreword which was written by my very special friend, Heather Cox Richardson. It ends thus:

“Going Deep is a loving, vibrant, sad, hopeful, funny, exciting, and profoundly personal portrait of a world that is passing, but which might simply be passing on to a new version of that same unique and magical world shown here: the dynamic interplay of land, water, and humanity that has always defined the Maine coast.

The world’s great storytellers are both outsiders and insiders, their craft an entry into closed villages and the tales they discover a gift they carry to the rest of us. This book is one of Peter’s stories, full of tales about communities, family, love, art, and life. Settle in and listen. It’ll be worth it.”

* You can see/hear about all this in Peter’s Eye, the 18-minute documentary an independent film company did in 2010 about my “getting back on the horse/boat,” and how I work when I am out there doing my thing.

The following are just a few sample spreads from the book....

In March of 2020, COVID was coming on hard and I thought that maybe a weekly 'hug from Maine' would be welcome, so I started sending these emails every Sunday morning….and I’m still doing that. These are usually short stories about what's behind the images, and people seemed to really enjoy getting them. I discovered that I love sharing in this manner and I so hope that you will enjoy them yourself.
